Shem
Name means: Name
Parents: Noah and unnamed wife
Wife: Not named
Children: Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, Aram
Found in: Genesis 5-11, I Chronicles 1, Luke 3:36
Shem was one of Noah's three sons. He was about 98 years old when the flood came (Genesis 11:10). Shem went into the ark along with his wife, parents, brothers, and sister-in-laws and they all survived. Two years after the flood, at the age of 100, he had a son named Arphaxad. He lived a total of 600 years.
One important event in Shem's life was an occasion when he showed respect to his father Noah. Noah had planted a vinyard after the flood and by drinking the wine of these grapes, he became drunk. While Shem's brother Ham responded with an attitude of disrespect, Shem and Japheth responded with mercy. They covered their father's nakedness and were later blessed by him for this. Shem appears again in the New Testament. There, he is included in the genealogy of Christ in Luke chapter 3.
Genesis 9:26 - And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
